SpaceShip - ideas

I have been working on the requested tutorial about space, spaceships and sci-fi and thought I will post a quick status. It's just the first bits and pieces. The idea is similar to the guns and rifles tutorial - breaking up the spaceships into smaller, easier to create elements to build a 'spaceship construction kit'.

I put together the first ships from a limited set of 'element'.

Let me know what you think.

  1. It sounds great. I just miss that I cannot identify the towers easily.

  2. Perfect! Looking forward to this tutorial! The yellow ship on the left seems to have some light / shading effect on those tube parts. But I think they should not be just mirrored for the left and right side of the ship. The light/dark switch should be switched on either the left or right side.
Anyways, can't wait to learn how to create wings, hulls, turrets, cockpits, engines and weapons ;-)
Also looking forward to space nebulae, asteroids and planets and thanks for considering this sci-fi tutorial!

  3. Great! I'm also looking forward to this tutorial!
Modularizing spaceships is a great idea.
I have some code without graphics waiting for this tutorial to bring it alive :)

    Thanks for your great work!

  9. Those designs with the turrets reminds me of a space shooter game i had on my old sega genesis. When I first heard the spaceship idea, I was kinda thinking sideliner ships with a blockbuddy character inside. But that's just me :)

    3. Hi blacky123... I am sorry... I have continued on the tutorial but then got flooded with work and am still in the office at the moment even though I should be hitting the road to make it to the holiday destination on time. I will put the tutorial on top of my todo list as soon as I am back from a week's vacation with the family (and will probably be rather eager to work again... :) )

  12. Ive been hoping that you release a book containing all your awesome tutorials. I just bought the city skylne one the moment I saw it. I always thought that I would never be able to draw anything for my games, Im no artist now but I dont feel unable anymore.
    THANKS from Mexico!

  13. I'm looking forward to the tutorial!

Can you take a look at screenshots from Gratuitous Space Battles? (example: http://positech.co.uk/gratuitousspacebattles/content-img/full9.jpg) I know these sprites were done using different techniques. I wouldn't expect similar results with Inkscape (not even close) but the different types of colors, shapes of components adds a lot of depth, openness and complexity! Maybe it's possible to draw some inspiration from this. :)

    1. I know the game very well [worked on it] and yes... I will include some shapes for more complex ships and also layer elements to add depth. The ships posted were the very first test. :)
